Dental Hygiene & Prevention

2600_Dentalhygiene_00Professional dental hygiene helps to remove bacteria and tooth deposits (plaque) in problem areas that you cannot reach on your own.

By preventing tooth decay and gum disease (periodontitis), professional dental hygiene plays an essential role in tooth preservation.

Dental Hygiene as a Preventative Method

Thanks to scientific knowledge we know that regular professional dental hygiene at regular intervals is essential in preventing diseases, from tooth decay to the dreaded periodontitis (the chronic inflammation of the tooth sockets). In 95 percent of cases we are able to stop periodontitis through therapeutic treatments. Untreated periodontitis will ultimately result in tooth loss. It can also lead to cardiovascular disease and a significantly elevated risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Course of Action

thumb_2600_Dentalhygiene_01The dental hygienist will carefully inspect your set of teeth before using specialist instruments to remove deposits on the tooth surfaces and any discoloration.

Hardened and soft deposits on the gum and in the gum pockets will then be removed using ultrasound. Thereafter mechanically reworking with special scalers.

In the next step the dental hygienist will clean the surfaces of the roots and any deeper deposits in the gum pockets (local anesthetics may be required).

The final stage of the treatment is polishing. We use air abrasion and special burnishes to give your teeth renewed brilliance. Fillings and borders of crowns are also polished in order to help slow down bacteria from accumulating here. In some cases teeth may also be treated with a concentrated fluoride agent.
Depending on the extent of the treatment, these steps can take place over one or more sessions.

Teamwork

Dental hygiene is teamwork at its best! Periodontologists (specialized dentists) work closely with dental hygienists, who also assume a decisive role in the act of diagnosis. Dental hygienists are able to provide patients with individual consultations and to recognize when periodontal treatment is necessary.
